After a slowish start to her training career, Lucinda Woodruff has started to make her mark.
In closing two days of the season, Woodruff has sent out 197 runners for 28 winners and while that might not sound impressive, she has had a winning percentage of 14.21 which is not bad at all.
She is based in Cape Town and has her father, Geoff, a multiple champion trainer in his heyday, as her assistant.
Of course, nobody can do it without the horses and one can see that she is finally starting to pick up some decent stock.
Woodruff saddles two runners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday and both have winning chances. The first comes up in Race 1, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m, where she sends out Ebisu. The two-year-old daughter of One World has only raced once, which was over this course and distance, in which she seventh, beaten 4-35 lengths by Lucienne.
There was some money for her and she shortened from 20-1 into 7-1. She lost ground at the start and was never really in the hunt but is expected to come on significantly from that run.
This is a very competitive race and she could find some of the others a little too strong. However, she should not be left out of Trifectas and Quartets.
Woodruff’s other runner comes up in Race 3, a Middle Stakes for fillies and mares over 1100m, in the form of Sohot Sowhat.
This soon-to-be four-year-old daughter of Soqrat has been lightly raced, having only contested seven runs for three wins and two seconds.
Her last outing was in the Grade 2 Tibouchina Stakes over 1400m in which she ran on powerfully to finish 1.75-length eighth behind Green Sapphire.
However, she was found not to be striding out so she clearly is better than that run.
She comes into to this event as the best weighted runner and on a tricky card, could be the best bet of the day.
