TAB WEEKEND SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS: 9 - 11 May
GREAT MATCHES AND CASH-BOOSTED TAB ...
Read moreKey matches and cash-boosted pools should provide royal entertainment for TAB soccer customers this weekend and it all starts tonight with a R150,000 carryover Soccer 10 that includes several crucial clashes, notably an English Championship promotion playoff first-leg semi-final between Coventry and Sunderland.
Tonight’s carryover Soccer 10 promises a big pool and a big payout because many of the games are tough to call. But the standout banker has to be Coventry on home turf to put Sunderland to the sword in their first-leg playoff.
Sunderland have lost the plot in recent weeks and come into this game on the back of five successive defeats, whereas Coventry will be buoyed by having thumped their then in-form rivals 3-0 in March. For Coventry it’s a great chance to win by a clear margin and set themselves up for a shot against Sheffield United and a slot in the English Premier Division next season.
Other potential bankers are Belgian First Division A table-toppers Sporting Charleroi to make the most of home advantage and beat second-placed Westerlo. Charleroi have not lost to Westerlo in a league clash since 2022.
And don’t miss the Las Palmas-Rayo Vallecano clash. Ls Palmas are fighting to avoid relegation and Vallecano are seeking an Europa Conference League slot next season.
The Nedbank Cup final between Soweto arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates headlines the day’s action and there’s big money to play for with three carryover pools, a R150,000-added Any 13 Xtra and a guaranteed R19-million pot should there be only one winner of Soccer 13.
For Chiefs the game is an opportunity to end a long trophy doubt, but they will have to play out of their skins to win this one. Pirates are on a five-game winning streak against them, which is a club record, and everything suggests they will extend that to six in the cup final, especially because they have become the knockout kings of South African football in the last few years.
The match is included in the carryover Soccer 6 and 10 pools, as well as four English Premiership clashes in which Manchester City and Brentford should both win away against teams who are already doomed to the Championship next season.
Sunday wraps up a high-octane weekend with top-of-the-table clashes in the English Premiership and Spain’s LaLiga. The outcome of the Anfield clash between already-crowned champions Liverpool and chief pursuers Arsenal is of academic interest only, but pride should ensure we are treated to a cracker contest.
Arne Slot’s men looked like they had been partying too hard in last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and you can expect Liverpool to turn in a much better display here. For the record Arsenal have drawn their last two league games at Liverpool, but one has to go all the way back to 2012 for the last time they won there in the league. That makes it a pretty safe bet Arsenal will not win on Sunday and best advice is to banker Liverpool to win in your Soccer 6 and 10 bets.
Another obvious banker in the same Soccer 10 is Sundowns to beat Stellenbosch at home and in the process move a step closer to winning an eighth successive PSL title.
Barcelona and Real Madrid clash in a game that could decide which one of the two wins LaLiga this season. Defeat for Madrid will leave them seven points behind their Catalan rivals and put their trophy hopes in the dustbin, as well as resulting in the boot for manager Carlo Ancelotti. Victory, however, will leave Barcelona only one point ahead with three rounds remaining.
