TAB WEEKEND SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS: 25 - 27 April
R25-MILLION SOCCER 13 HEADLINES A GRAND ...
Read moreThe action kicks off at 18:00 tonight with a R150,000 carryover Soccer 10 and a R75,000-added Soccer 6, which both include the African Champions League semi-final clashes featuring our top teams Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
For the first time in history there’s a chance of an all-South-African CAF Champions League final, although both Pirates and Sundowns will have to play out of their skins to emerge victorious in Cairo tonight.
The Buccaneers square up to Egyptian Premier League leaders Pyramids in the second leg of their semi-final at the June 30 Stadium. Pirates were held to a goalless draw at home in the first leg and were saved twice by the Video Assistant Referee after Pyramids had put the ball in the net.
Pyramids will take heart from causing Pirates so many problems at the Orlando Stadium and have a formidable home record in Champions League this season. They have won all six of their games at the June 30 stadium, averaging close to four goals a game and never conceding more than a single goal.
Those stats give you a clear picture of what Pirates are up against tonight. The good news is that they did not concede an away goal in Orlando, so a score draw tonight will put Pirates in the final.
And make no mistake Pirates have done outstandingly in what is to be coach Jose Riveiro’s last season at the club. They won the MTN8 and are through to the Nedbank Cup final, plus they still have a solid chance of overhauling Sundowns in the race for the Betway Premiership title.
There’s no doubt that the odds are stacked against them tonight, but make no mistake Pirates are knockout specialists so don’t be quick to write off their chances.
Sundowns are in the identical position to Pirates as they take on Al Ahly tonight in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Cairo International Stadium. Ahly also got a goalless draw in the away leg at Loftus and the 12-time Champions League winners will fancy their chances of beating Sundowns in front of their own fans.
But fact is Ahly have not managed to beat Sundowns in their last seven clashes, losing four out of four to Sundowns away and only managing to draw at home. As with Pirates, a score draw tonight will catapult Sundowns into to the final and that looks well within their capabilities.
The standout banker in tonight’s carryover Soccer 10 has to be Atalanta, who should be too good for visitors Lecce in a Serie A clash in Italy.
Tomorrow’s mega Soccer 13 includes four English Premier League games and the first of the weekend’s FA Cup semi-finals. In the EPL clashes Brighton, Newcastle and Wolves all look up to winning at home and Fulham can get back on the winning path away to Southampton.
The Championship matches in the pool are harder to forecast, but Middlesbrough, Millwall and Preston all look fair bets to win at home.
Aston Villa (24-19) and Manchester City (7-9) are favourites to beat Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest respectively in the FA Cup semis. The odds look a fair reflection, but this will be cup football at its best and you can’t write off the underdogs.
