Van Zyl’s Passion on the line in KZN

Trainer Gareth van Zyl may have been disappointed by the performance of King Pelles who finished unplaced in Saturday’s Betway Summer Cup but could get some consolation as he has a few decent individuals running on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday

The first of them looks to be Luhamba Phambili.

He has the speed to get out quickly and lead all the way in his first start on the Polytrack. He has high-class form and ranks the best weighted horse in Race 2, a Condition Plate run over 1000m, which is a competitive affair.

But Van Zyl’s best runner on the day must be What A Passion, who finished second to Dean Kannemeyer’s Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas-bound filly Princess Of Gaul in her second start.

The latter ran out an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship recently, What A Passion, who had multiple subsequent winners behind in her next two starts, is now long overdue that first win.

The What A Winter filly is now meeting a field low on quality form in Race 3, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m. Priory Terrace, while consistent, has been getting beaten in weak fields while Alakazam returns from a lengthy break following a wind operation and has drawn widest.
