How good is Mexican Pete?

That is the question we will probably get answered at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday when the son of Master Of My Fate lines up in Race 4, a MR 72 Handicap over 1600m on the Polytrack.

Trained by Frank Robinson, Mexican Pete has only run once, and he romped to a facile 2.50-length victory over Benni In The Area.

It is hard to determine how good this three-year-old colt is based on that one run but there are some pointers we can look at which could give us some kind of idea.

On the positive side he was well supported in the betting which means a decent run was expected. Secondly, he won in a decent time and it was on the Polytrack which is the surface for this meeting.

There might be a concern that no winner from seven runners has come from the form line, but a horse can do no more than win. Also, runner-up Benni In The Area, third-placed Magic Prince and fifth-placed Isorender all placed in their next start behind King Pelles on the turf last Sunday, and that winner looks worth following.

The other positive is that he is still a colt which indicates he is probably an easy horse to work with.

Mexican Pete comes into this race carrying 60.5kg which means he will be giving weight to a number of hard knockers, but he does have the benefit of jumping from No 1 draw and will have Sean Veale in the irons.

He tries 1600m for the first time but based on the manner in which he handled 1400m, he could be even better over the additional 200m. Certainly on breeding, he is likely to go even further.
