Two bets to ‘Dezire’ at the Vaal

Bettors face a tricky card at the Vaal on Thursday.

There are nine races carded, the fields are large, and they are highly competitive. Finding a banker on the card look nigh impossible because nothing really stands out although there are two runners who could have a lot more improvement to come.

The first comes up in Race 5 and is Tony Peter-trained Dezire. This daughter of Vercingetorix won on debut and now returns to the scene of that victory and will race over the same course and distance.

This filly is out of Lightning Bird who is a full sister to one of South Africa’s great sprinters, Mythical Flight. A number of decent sprinters have been produced by this daughter of Jet Master and Dezire could have lots to come.  

Dezire went off at 25-2 on debut and won convincingly. She showed good pace from the start and went on to beat Hotaru by one length. Interestingly, the runner-up will line up in Race 3 so keep an eye on how this two-year-old filly will perform in open company.

Dezire runs in a MR 76 Handicap for fillies and mares and she will have Calvin Habib in the irons this time.

Gavin Lerena will ride Molotov Cocktail in Race 7 over 1800m, and further progress is expected from this James Crawford-trained runner who confirmed the promise of his 1400m debut with a start-to-finish 1600m maiden success five weeks ago.

By Danon Platina, his dam is Nother Russia which makes him a half-brother to brilliant filly Gimme A Nother, now racing in the US.

He should be even better going over the longer distance this time with the added experience.
