Two bankers on the Ides of March at Greyville

Beware the Ides of March!

Those were the words uttered to Julius Caeser by a soothsayer on his way into the Roman senate in 44BC, the day in which he was struck down by a group of assassins.

The Ides of any month referred to the 15th day and hopefully will not see punters struck down by the prophetic curse on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

That is because there appear to be two pretty good bankers on the card.

The first comes up in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1600m, where Gareth van Zyl saddles Secret Is Ours. This gelding is bred in the purple and is a full-brother to Justin Snaith-trained star mare Bela-Bela, winner of seven races including three Grade 1s.

This son of Dynasty out of brilliant broodmare Mystic Spring does not look in her class but he does have the form to win this race.

Van Zyl could not have a found a weaker field for his charge as the average merit rating is just 56. This three-year-old grey gelding has a merit rating of 76 and is rated at least 4kg better than any of his opposition.

He ran a neck second behind Legislate’s Dance last time at Scottsville in his first start over 1600m, and from No 2 draw and Anton Marcus up, he is confidently expected to shed his maiden tag.

The same is true of Broadway in Race 5, a Maiden Plate over 1900m. Lezeanne Forbes’ charge has only raced once, got too far back but then flew late to produce the fastest 400m to finish. That was over 1600m, and now with the experience and the extra 300m, he is also expected to win in another moderate field.
