Touleen can shine brightly at Leicester

September 2025

A couple of juvenile talents can light up Leicester's card on Tuesday, with Touleen looking a potentially useful runner in the British EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes.

Trained by Owen Burrows for her owner-breeder Shadwell, this Lope De Vega filly hails from a fine female line with her dam, Talaayeb, a Group Three winner from the family of Oaks-placed Rumoush and 1000 Guineas winner Ghanaati.

Touleen was duly well supported on her racecourse bow, justifying her 2-1 favourite tag by racing prominently over 1400m at Newbury and eventually easing to a 2.25-length victory.

The form of that win has yet to be thoroughly tested but while only three rivals have subsequently run, one has won and one has finished third, so perhaps it is a little more weighty than it first appears.

Touleen has some big-race entries to come later on in the autumn and it will be disappointing if she cannot put up a decent showing here.

Monoceros is another who looks a possible quality prospect following a debut win at Newmarket.

As a 750,000 guineas yearling buy, the Godolphin runner was always going to attract attention when he hit the track and was sent off the 6-5 market leader.

While he only prevailed by 0.5-lengths over I Can Dance, that runner has since finished second again and Monoceros was value for more than the winning distance as he hung a bit in the finish.

Charlie Appleby keeps his sights relatively low in the British EBF 'Confined' Novice Stakes and his patience can pay dividends.

Tom Marquand could be a jockey to keep a close eye on in the east midlands and it would be no surprise to see him find the scoresheet with the progressive Kimeko Glory who registered his third win of the season in style at Sandown in July.

Freshened up since, he has a 7lb higher mark to defy but is clearly in fine heart this summer and sets the standard in the British EBF Fillies' Handicap.

Marquand is also aboard the consistent Ishe Worth Agamble who could prove appropriately named for Tim Easterby in the closing Next Meeting @leicesterraces Monday 22nd September Handicap.

Mighty Bandit commanded a fee of E420,000 when picked up by Warren Greatrex in the Andrew and Gemma Brown dispersal sale and although snapped up with hurdling ambitions in mind, it is the Flat where he has been seen most of late.

Most recently seen scoring with ease over the same course and distance he tackles in the Happy Retirement Ricky Leeson Handicap, he could prove a tough nut to crack if in the same form at Ffos Las.

Jamie Osborne's Palio Di Siena may have let favourite backers down at Salisbury most recently, but that was over a sharp 1200m and he could finally open his account in the Linda Jones Memorial Maiden Stakes now returned to 1400m and at a track he ran well at earlier in the season.

Up at Carlisle, Isle Of Fernandez could be the one to side with in the opening LPD Doors - Expect More EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes.

Although unable to make her mark in a competitive running of the Convivial at York, that outing was on good to firm ground but before that she performed with credit at Goodwood when second to Karl Burke's well-regarded Aylin on heavy.

Aylin has since finished third at Group Three level, while the third from Goodwood, Charlie Johnston's Ice Sovereigns, has gone on to win twice suggesting the form is strong and granted a little ease in the ground, Isle Of Fernandez could give it a further boost. - Press Association
