Top jocks to kick off Pick 6

There are no odds-on favourites and in most cases, they are betting 4-1 and upwards the field.

This course has thrown up many Pick 6 carryovers in the past few months but in most of those cases it was because the so-called “good things” got run over, and as a result, with the obvious bankers beaten, the majority of Pick 6 tickets ended up in rubbish bins.

At this meeting, however, there are no obvious good things and bettors go into this meeting forewarned. It is often sensible advice to follow the leading jockeys and trainers, particularly those whose horses perform well on the Polytrack.

Perhaps the best race to take a chance is in the first leg of the Pick 6, Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1900m, and only go with two horses.

Gavin van Zyl saddles Walnut, the mount of Warren Kennedy, and he could be ready to pick up his first win. Two runs back he raced over 1800m on the Polytrack but he had blinkers on and they might have been more detrimental than beneficial. With them off he ran a better race over 1500m on the turf at Scottsville.

He could benefit from the extra 400m in this event and if he does see it out, the son of Kingsbarns may be a hard (wall)nut to crack.

The obvious threat comes from A Thousand Tunes, trained by Ashley Fortune and ridden by Anton Marcus. This lightly raced son of Noble Tune improved markedly when tried over ground last time and should progress further.
