Therese to beat the boys at Fairview

January 2023

Jack Milner

Three Non-Black Type feature races top the Fairview card on Friday and they all look interesting affairs.

The Fairview Mile, Lakeside Handicap and the Fairview Merchants are the three races concerned and perhaps the most interesting is the Lakeside Handicap over 2400m where five-year-old mare Santa Therese takes on some hard-knocking colts and geldings.

This Alan Greeff-trained daughter of Flower Alley has generally been running over shorter but it is worth noting she is unbeaten in her three runs over 2000m and upwards.

It actually makes one wonder why she has not been exposed to more races over longer distances because on breeding it should not be an issue.

This will be her first race over 2400m and it gives her the opportunity to prove she is good enough to beat the boys.

As this is a handicap, she is joint top weight with Jaeger Moon who has a win and a third place in three runs over the distance. However, as an 11-time winner from 21 starts, some of them against the likes of Captain’s Ransom in the Paddock Stakes and the Majorca Stakes, both Grade 1 event, Santa Therese looks to have far too much class for this field.

Richard Fourie takes the ride once again.

When she ran in a Pinnacle Stakes over 2200m last November, Santa Therese beat a number of these runners. However, many of them are weighted to turn the tables on her but she did win with quite a bit in hand. Also, that race was on the Polytrack while this is on the turf, a surface on which Greeff’s charge is an eight-time winner.

The Merchants looks like a contest between Global Drummer and Cliff Top, who has a weight advantage of 8kg, while Gavin Smith-trained Ferrari Ice looks the runner to beat in the Fairview Mile.
