Jack Milner: Punters will have to weigh up the pros and cons of improvement against form in Monday’s race meeting at Fairview.
Once again, all races will be run on the Polytrack.
There are two races, in particular, where this factor comes into play and they are Races 4 and 5.
Race 4 is a MR 83 Handicap over 2000m and in this event we have Jaeger Moon and King Capone running against one another for the second successive time.
One cannot fault the recent performances of Jaeger Moon. Since returning from a two-month rest in September, he has notched up three wins from three starts and has performed better the further he has travelled.
He won his maiden over 1600m and then notched up two wins over 2000m. In all cases he dominated the races from the front and he clearly likes to dictate matters. However, if you peruse the average merit ratings of his three wins, they were all very low. In his maiden win it was 55, then 60 and 72.
This time the average rating is 80 and that will be more of a test for Gavin Smith’s charge. Marco van Rensburg, who is unbeaten on the son of Capetown Noir, takes the ride again.
In comes King Capone who produced the fastest 400m to finish last time when a 1.75-length third behind Jaeger Moon.
He is 2.5kg better off on carded weights but then gets another 2.5kg courtesy of Kyle Strydom’s apprentice claim. On form, that should be more than enough to reverse the result.
Race 5 is a FM 76 Handicap over 2000m, and in this case it is talented Colorado Springs who comes under the spotlight. She beat Mary Moon by a neck last time but now also meets her rival on 5kg worse terms. Again, it is the 2.5kg claimed by Strydom that adds to the conundrum.
I will stick with the form and go with King Capone and Mary Moon. After all, they both provide the better value.
