Take a safari at Fairview

MARCO VAN RENSBURG

Jack Milner: There are some tricky races at Fairview tomorrow, but punters can build up a kitty in Race 1 where trainer Gavin Smith sends out Safari Blue in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1400m on the turf.

The What A Winter colt found plenty of support on debut and was sent off at 33-20. However, he did not have a happy start to his racing career as he was slowly away and then received a bump in running.

The experience will have brought him on, and this time Smith has engaged Marco van Rensburg for the ride. This will be his first run around the turn, but he is nicely drawn in barrier No 2.

The opposition does not look particularly strong, so Safari Blue looks the best bet on the day.

Trainer Alan Greeff certainly has a way with the opposite sex, equine speaking that is, and he has a strong hand in three of the eight races.

In Race 2 he saddles four of the seven runners. Calandra has been in very good form of late and does look the pick of his runners. This filly has stable jockey Greg Cheyne in the irons and the last time he rode her, she won by an impressive four lengths.

Stable companion Duchess Of Bourbon ruined her chances last time by being losing lots of ground at the start, and hopefully whatever was troubling her has been sorted out because she does have some ability and can win on her best form.

Green Dragon and Hawthorn have done well on the Polytrack this season and although both of them do not seem to be as talented as the other two, they deserve some respect.

In Race 7 Greeff has five of the 10 carded but which one of them will end up winning is anyone’s guess. Princess Kalisi has been very good this season, but it would be foolish to ignore the form of Golden Chance if she can come back to her very best.

Flame Tree and Water Spirit are out a bit at the weights but making their local debut they are capable of vast improvement and deserve respect.

Lunar wish is more likely to place than win.

Earlier, in Race 6, the Greeff-Cheyne combination could be upstaged by stable companion Gold Rock, who comes into this race fit and at the top of his game.
