Jack Milner: Sweet Sensation will be attempting to win her second start in five days when she lines up in Race 7 at the Vaal on Thursday.
She runs in a MR 92 Handicap over 1000m for fillies and mares.
The Corne Spies-trained filly showed her class last Saturday when she rallied late to get the better of strongly fancied Anna Capri in the Non-Black Type WSB Sophomore 1000 for three-year-olds over 1000m, also at the Vaal.
She was surprisingly easy to back at 10-1 for that race but under a perfectly times ride by Muzi Yeni, she got up in the dying strides to beat Anna Capri by a head.
She ran against her own age group in that race but will be facing open opposition in Thursday’s race.
She has not received a penalty for last Saturday’s win so there has been no adjustment to her merit rating or her weight for this race. The daughter of Var has always looked to be above average and now she has her second win under her belt, she can continue to improve.
Yeni will be back in the irons on this occasion.
The danger could be another three-year-old daughter of Var, in Miracle Flight from the Paul Peter yard. She has been running in feature races of late so will benefit from this drop in class.
Miracle Flight will also be reunited with jockey Warren Kennedy, who has ridden her five times for three wins and a place.
This is not the easiest of cards to find a banker but the runner who has been close up in his last two starts and is overdue a good win is Crank It Up in Race 2, a MR 93 Handicap over the straight 1600m.
The gelding is as honest as they come and has the produced the fastest 400m to finish in his last two starts.
Things did not go his way when second to Whorly Whorly last time over 1400m at Turffontein but he will enjoy the extra 200m. Gavin Lerena takes the ride on the Johan Janse van Vuuren son of Marchfield.
