Summer arrives early for Peter

July 2021

Jack Milner: Midweek race meetings at Turffontein regularly attract a better class of runners and that appears to be the case on Thursday when they race on the Standside track.

It could produce some favourable results for punters, the best of which looks to be Sound Of Summer in Race 7, and MR 104 Handicap over 1600m.

Trainer Paul Peter has taken his time with this son of Silvano who only made his course debut in March. Peter has patiently allowed his charge to come through the divisions and he has comfortably risen to the occasion.

“He came to us quite late and then I felt he needed gelding,” explained Peter on Wednesday.

“But he is very well, and will be very hard to beat in this field.”

He has only raced four times for three wins and a second place and does not look like stopping. He clearly has his foibles and at times has proved to be a little stubborn at the start. However, that has not stopped him from winning.

Interestingly, his three wins have been on the Standside course with his lone defeat coming on the Inside track. He comes into this race with just 54.5kg and will be ridden for the first time by Gavin Lerena.

His opposition looks well exposed, with Mike and Adam Azzie sending out three of those runners. The best could be Orpheus who turns seven on Saturday, as does stablemate Full Mast.

Wylie Wench has run well against her own sex and did win a handicap against the boys where she beat Waqaas by 0.30 lengths. This field is a lot stronger, and she will have to give 3kg to Sound Of Summer.

Kingsley’s Heart finished second behind Sound Of Summer in a Progress Plate over this course and distance in June, beaten 2.75 lengths. He is now 3kg worse off and looks most unlikely to turn that form round.
