Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren could come away from Sunday’s Turffontein meeting with at least a double
Racing is on the Inside track and Janse van Vuuren could start the ball rolling in Race 2 with William Longsword filly Bon Vivant, who contests a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1200m.
She defied a significant market drift on debut to finish a staying-on third over 1000m, outrunning her 66-1 starting price (opened 16-1) against older and more-experienced rivals.
Van Vuuren’s charge would have learned plenty from that outing and should, on the evidence of her promising introduction, improve for the step up to 1200m and the switch to competing against her own age group, with Randall Simons up.
Gavin Lerena could complete the Van Vuuren double with South Boy in Race 5, a Maiden Plate over 1200m.
This South American import, a son of Argentinian sire Equal Stripes, has finished second in consecutive starts over 1160m and conceded weight to the winners of each contest.
He will be better suited to the conditions of this race and appears ready to open his account, with Lerena’s booking a further boost to South Boy’s credentials.
Janse van Vuuren also has some interestingly bred unraced runners on the card so keep an eye open for any betting support.
In Race 3, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m, the father and son combination of Mike and Adam Azzie send out Specially Selected. The Duke Of Marmalade colt is another who belied a starting price of 66-1 because after a slow start, and hanging in from the 200m mark, he flew up late to run Barney’s Pride to 0.90 lengths.
A winner has come from that form line, and he could be the standout bet on a tricky card. His main dangers appear to be a slew of unraced runners and that could make him a viable Pick 6 banker as he should be the best of the raced horses.
It is also great to see they have stuck with jockey Brian Nyawo, who came so close to causing a massive upset.
