Starmount to shine brightest at Kelso

Written by Press Association | Feb 28, 2026 9:20:19 AM

Starmount will aim to live up to his name when Ben Pauling's charge leads the field in the bet365 Premier Novices' Hurdle at Kelso on Saturday.

The six-year-old heads to Scotland on the back of a cosy 15-length triumph at Wetherby last month, having finished fourth behind Supreme Novices' contender Idaho Sun in the Formby at Aintree on Boxing Day before that.

His latest victory was his second in two appearances in West Yorkshire and he remains unexposed, with Ben Jones again in the saddle.

Three-time Grade One winner Protektorat can prove there is still life in the 11-year-old as he targets glory in the bet365 Premier Chase.

Dan Skelton's evergreen stable stalwart beat Grand National hopeful Resplendent Grey last time out over 4400m, his eighth over the obstacles during his illustrious career.

He returns to Listed territory in the Scottish Borders and with Iroko a notable absentee, he should dominate proceedings in a small field.

Captain Hugo can bounce back from his disappointing fall at Musselburgh to play his part in the bet365 Morebattle Hurdle.

Philip Hobbs and Johnson White's six-year-old had enjoyed an impressive start to life over obstacles, beaten only by Taurus Bay in the three races he has finished.

He was prominent when coming to grief three out earlier this month and if that has not left a mark he can realise some of his potential in what is a valuable prize.

Dartmoor Pirate can showcase his Cheltenham Festival credentials in the Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase at Doncaster.

Anthony Honeyball's six-year-old, who still holds entries for the National Hunt Challenge Cup and Kim Muir at Prestbury Park, is aiming to complete a hat-trick following wins at Lingfield and Town Moor, latterly in the Great Yorkshire Chase.

The subtle increases in distance during his last two starts did not seem to faze Dartmoor Pirate and a hat-trick is on the cards.

Dream Shadow is another with Cheltenham Festival aspirations, which she can boost with a strong display in the Virgin Bet A Good Bet Mares' Novices' Hurdle.

The Fergal O'Brien-trained seven-year-old was beaten on her hurdling debut by Jamie Snowden's La Conquiere before routine victories at Warwick and Ayr.

She stepped up to Grade Two level last time out in the Jane Seymour Mares' Novices' Hurdle, finishing in fourth, and that experience should do no harm.

At Newbury, Sam Thomas should finally get graded honours for Vincenzo in the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

His eight-year-old star has been impressive over hurdles and fences during his career to date, without getting his nose in front during Premier handicaps.

Vincenzo finished as runner-up on the last three occasions in such races, but a morale-boosting success at Ascot last month could be just the tonic.

In the BetMGM Spring Cup Stakes at Lingfield, Jamie Osborne could have a six-timer on his hands with Ten Carat Harry.

The three-year-old is unbeaten on six appearances on the all-weather, including the last five, and has worked his way from class five company for a tilt at Listed honours.

Staying on the all-weather at Southwell, Charlie Appleby has an interesting newcomer in Pursuit Of Love - a full-brother to John Gosden's Group Two winner Fanny Logan - who makes his debut in the Read Meg Nicholls' Blog At betmgm.co.uk Novice Stakes. - Press Association
