Stakes upped for minor races

August 2020

Phumelela, Kenilworth Racing and the Racing Association are pleased to announce that minor race stakes in their regions will be increased for the months of September, October and November.

For the month of September minor race stakes levels will be increased as follows:-

Highveld from R67,500 to R76,000

Western Cape from R40,000 to R46,000

Eastern Cape from R35,000 to R40,000

For the months of October and November, a similar level of increase will be applied to minor races, however consideration will be given to tiered stakes levels in the various race divisions in each region, providing greater reward for better quality minor races as the Highveld and Western Cape feature seasons get underway.

The Racing Association will continue to contribute towards stakes as they have been doing since racing resumed in June.

Graded, Listed and Non-Black-Type feature races will remain at the national reduced minimum levels during this period as follows:-

Grade 1 – Open R425k, F&M / 2yo R325k

Grade 2 – Open R175k, F&M / 2yo R150k

Grade 3 – Open R125k, F&M / 2yo R100k

Listed – R85k

Non-Black-Type – R80k

While the Racing Operators remain under significant financial pressure, encouraging signs are starting to emerge from betting revenues. As a result of this, and in recognition of the importance of owners in the industry, the Racing Operators have agreed to increase their contribution to stakes.

The Racing Operators and the Racing Association will continue to engage on a regular basis pending the emergence of the new racing structure for the future.
