Spurs need
Son to shine
as they seek
UCL berth
By Mark Gleeson
Harry Kane might be the headline act at Tottenham Hotspur but as they chase a place in next season’s Champions League, Spurs will be looking as much to their South Korean international Son Heung-min for inspiration and goals.
The 29-year-old is second behind Mohamed Salah on the list of this season’s leading Premier League scorers and outshone the Egyptian last weekend as he scored for Spurs in their 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
Son’s incredible speed is the hallmark of his game, allowing Spurs to use the counter-attack strategy to best effect. He has also been finding the back of the net more often than usual, with the England captain now regularly dropping into deeper positions to help set up his teammate.
It is an effective switch to the tactics introduced by Antonio Conte, who has a bromance with the Korean.
Conte has regularly praised Son. “You’re talking about a player who is really, really good, an important player but at the same time a good person,” the Italian said last month.
Son says the detail and improvement Conte is providing is “incredible”. So, too, the passion of the manager. “It’s really positive energy. He’s just into it, passionate.”
