Snaith raiders to fight it out

April 2024

Jack Milner

It is no secret Justin Snaith-trained Mucho Dinero has been aimed at the country’s most popular race, the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Snaith has already had a great start to his KwaZulu-Natal champions season and has more interesting runners on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, the most eye catching of which is Mucho Dinero.

One of the most talked about horses, the Western Cape-based gelding will be the star attraction as he gets to sample the track on which he will be tested at the highest level, but even more interesting is that stable rider Grant van Niekerk makes his way into town to ride just him on the day.

On Sunday Mucho Dinero runs in Race 4, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1600m, which might be a tad sharp, but he is best weighted, has the class and won’t receive much of a hike in ratings if he were to win.

However, stablemate The Grey King, who also lines up in Race 4, also have Durban July aspirations as he finished second behind highly talented Green With Envy in the Grade 3 Politician Stakes over 1800m on Cape Town Met day.

The Grey King has since been gelded and he comes into this race with just 52kg on his back, so from No 1 draw and with Muzi Yeni in the irons, it won’t be a shock to see him get away from the field if allowed to.

In fact, he could be better suited to the conditions of this race and is the selection to win this.

Western Cape horses as expected have been winning race after race on their local debuts and both Dark Winter (Race 1) for Snaith, as well as Buzz Bomb (Race 3) for Glan Kotzen, rate big chances in their respective heats as well.

Dark Winter has been progressing with each start and was quite impressive coming from off the pace having been handicapped by an outside draw down the straight at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

She looks a sensible type so may take the change to the Greyville track and 1400m in her stride. You Bring Me Joy looks a threat as the two-time winner is not carrying 3kg more but just 1.5kg more due to her 1.5kg apprentice claim. She has stamina in her female line like Dark Winter and has drawn well so is another for Swingers and Exactas.

Buzz Bomb could be head and shoulders above his field as he made good progress in the super-hot Little Ballerina Cape Super Sales race. It is a race that has produced multiple winners and the field he meets looks weak.
