Smith’s Drummer to beat the rest

August 2021

GLOBAL DRUMMER

Gavin Smith-trained Global Drummer is only four years old and is already a 10-time winner from 13 starts.

He can add to this tally with a victory in Race 7, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m on the Fairview Polytrack on Tuesday.

The Global View gelding is unbeaten in three starts on this surface. He has also won four of five outings over the distance, beaten just 0.15 lengths after a slow start on the other run.

Apprentice Yuzae Ramzan is the latest to have ridden and won on him and his 2.5kg claim will definitely help as, interestingly enough, Global Drummer is not at the top of the best-weighted column under the conditions of the race.

That rests with the Alan Greeff-trained Carioca, who looked good when reeling off decent wins in May and June but was disappointing when unplaced last time.

Perhaps one needs to put a line through that effort as it was too bad to be true.

Carioca will have the services of Greg Cheyne, who had a double at last Friday’s meeting.

More of a threat could come from Earth Hour. Earth Hour and Marmara Sea have been at each other’s throat all year and Earth Hour’s connections will be happy Marmara Sea has not turned up for this race so they will be expecting another top performance from their charge.

Clearly Earth Hour’s last run can be safely ignored as he was reported to be not striding out. That was on the turf, and he is clearly a better horse on the Polytrack where he has a record of three wins and six places from 10 starts.

Another Smith-trained runner Barberton Silver is a decent horse on the Polytrack but will probably find this distance a bit sharp and this is surely a preparation race for him.
