Smith set for good day at Fairview

As we approach the end of the year, the Eastern Cape battle for trainer supremacy comes to the fore once again.

As expected, it is Alan Greeff and Gavin Smith at the top of the log with the former and current champion trainer in the lead on 53 wins, which puts him 10 clear of Gavin Smith.

However, Smith has the opportunity to close the gap a little as he sends out some decent runners on the Polytrack at Fairview on Friday.

There are three runners who stand out and they are the opening two races and the last two races. If the bookmakers have it right he could win the first juvenile race of the season with Canford Cliffs filly Instaworthy who will be ridden by Gareth Wright.

In Race 2 he has Richard Fourie riding for him and he is aboard World Soprano who has run two excellent runs since arriving in the province and in this field looks very hard to beat.

JP van der Merwe is aboard Smith’s runner in Race 7, a MR 86 Handicap over 1600m, where he rides Destiny's Angel. This gelding is in top form and three wins and two seconds from his last five starts, all over this distance although four of them were on turf.

He has not won on the Polytrack but was only beaten 0.10 lengths by Dowser in his penultimate race which was on this surface.
