Smith looking for flying start

The start of the new season has arrived, and Eastern Cape Champion Trainer Gavin Smith will be keen to carry on where he left off.

He can get off to a good start at Fairview on Monday when they race on the Polytrack as he does appear to be the trainer punters are most likely to follow in their exotic bets.

Stable star Global Drummer may not have picked up a cheque in his last start, but he did have to travel all the way to Pietermaritzburg to run in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200m at Scottsville.

Under the circumstances he was not disgraced when finishing just 3.95 lengths behind winner Alesian Chief.

Global Drummer farmed a lot of his wins in Pinnacle Stakes races at Fairview races and that is where he is back again in Race 3, over 1200m.

As added insurance Smith has reached for 4kg claiming apprentice Mfanelo Zuma.

The five-year-old son of Global View was already hard to beat under the conditions of the race and the added 4kg will aid his cause even better.

In Race 7, a MR 72 Handicap over 1900m, Smith saddles Cane Lime 'N Soda and he has been a good recruit to the yard.

The gelding arrived in the yard a disappointing three-time winner as a lot more was expected of him. But two wins for Smith has seen his merit rating shoot up, but he should still be very competitive off his current mark.

He is course-and-distance suited and actually loves the Polytrack.
