Smith has a spy in his camp

Winners from the Gavin Smith yard are sprouting up all over the place and the run looks unlikely to dry up at Fairview on Friday when they race on the turf track.

Smith has three runners in Race 2, a Graduation Plate over 1200m, and it would come as no surprise were they to make up the Trifecta.

Topping his runners is Forest Spy who was one of the best juveniles in the province. Unfortunately, this Global View gelding has not been at his best since having been gelded and was a bitter disappointment last time out. It is possible he may have been in need of both of his runs since taking a trip to Kwa-Zulu Natal.

With the scratching of London Roads, Forest Spy is weighted to win this race comfortably if anywhere near his best form. S'manga Khumalo is in good form and has been entrusted with the ride.

He did drift in the betting last time when finishing unplaced but he does look far better than his rivals in this event.

It is hard to be certain what distance will best suit Zatara Magic as he has run well over a range of trips. Two starts back he ran a cracker behind the decent Kaya’s Hope but did not repeat it last time out behind that stable companion.

Jet Mirage is hardly a model of consistency but is coming off what is probably his best performance yet when touched off by Blonde Act. That was over 1400m on the Polytrack but he takes a jump in class and a drop in distance this time.

That run suggests he is better than his current mark but his stable companions are better rated and he will need to do more to beat either Zatara Magic or Forest Spy.
