Shabab can back up impressive debut at Newbury

Shabab Al Ahli made a huge impression on his Southwell introduction and it will be fascinating to see how he fares on his turf debut at Newbury on Friday.

The son of Frankel is well-related as a half-brother to Group Three winner Klondike, Queen's Vase victor Kemari and the useful Chorus, so it was no surprise to see him knocked down to Godolphin for 500,000 guineas as a yearling.

Unraced at two, cramped odds of 8-15 suggested plenty was expected of the Dante and Derby entrant on his first start on the all-weather and he delivered spectacularly, putting 8.5-lengths between himself and the chasing pack.

While that form is probably nothing to write home about, Shabab Al Ahli could not have been more impressive and while he comes up against a few other previous winners in the Darley EBF Novice Stakes, he probably needs to double his tally if he is going to take up either or both of his lofty engagements.

Andrew Balding has been among the winners this month and the Kingsclere handler will surely have high hopes for Allaire in the Dreweatts Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Although no match for the comfortable winner Felicitas on her Lingfield debut in December, the Kirsten Rausing homebred shaped with plenty of promise in finishing best of the rest and the third home Estissa has won since and is now rated in the mid-80s, giving the form a solid look.

As a half-sister to English and Irish St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov, Allaire should improve for the step up from 1600m to 2000m on her reappearance and looks sure to be involved in the finish.

Astrazar gets the nod in what is a fiercely competitive Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Handicap.

Ed Walker's Starman gelding appeared to thrive on his racing at two, building on several sound efforts in defeat with a couple of season-ending wins at Ffos Las and York, the latter being a narrow but lucrative success over subsequent winner Ghost Mode - now rated 98 - in the British EBF £100,000 Final.

Astrazar runs off 86 on his reappearance and that could prove lenient if he is fit enough to do himself justice.

Secret Force catches the eye in the opening race on day one of the Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr.

The four-year-old won his first two starts for Gavin Cromwell, with a narrow Flat win at Listowel followed by a dominant hurdling debut at Punchestown.

He has come up short in stronger juvenile contests since, but lines up in the Slater Menswear Handicap Hurdle with an opening mark of 124 and with both a tongue-tie and cheekpieces fitted for the first time, it would be no surprise to see him take his game to another level for Scottish owner Jimmy Fyffe.

Myretown has endured a bitterly disappointing season, but he is given one last chance in the £50,000 Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase.

The nine-year-old was being talked up as a potential Grand National or even Gold Cup contender following a brilliant front-running victory in the Ultima at last year's Cheltenham Festival, but he suffered a heavy fall as favourite for the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on his November reappearance and he has largely struggled since, most recently finishing down the field when defending his Ultima crown.

Perhaps the combination of a drop back in trip, a small field and softer ground can reignite the fire on home soil. - Press Association
