Raiders hit PE for Algoa Cup

October 2022

Jack Milner

There is top racing at Fairview Racecourse on Friday with the running of the R350,000 TAB4Racing Algoa Cup over 2000m and the R250,000 Racehorse Owners Association Stakes for three-year-olds over 1600m.

Both are Listed races run on the turf track.

As is so often the case, trainers from the Western Cape are raiding in full force with all of Glen Kotzen, Justin Snaith, Candice Bass-Robinson, Andre Nel and Brett Crawford having runners in the features.

Of the five visiting trainers it is Kotzen who has really come out with all guns blazing as he has four runners in the Algoa Cup and three in the ROA Stakes.

He has been in hot form in Port Elizabeth recently and last Friday claimed first and second in the final leg of the Poly Challenge with Cat Daddy and My Bestie respectively.

His four Algoa Cup runners are Crimson King, Chollima, Follow The Star and Han Solo while he sends out Grinkov, Dowser and Famous And Rich in the three-year-old feature.

The local challenge is headed up by Gavin Smith who has five runners in the Algoa Cup and four in the ROA Stakes, including talented Khaya’s Hope who is the highest rated runner and will have in-form Keagan de Melo in the irons.
