Queen to rule at Turffontein

Jack Milner: The familiar yellow and black colours of Mauritzfontein have been in the spotlight at Turffontein lately, especially after Summer Pudding’s victory in the WSB Gauteng Summer Cup last month.
Those colours could provide bettors with two bankers on Saturday’s Turffontein card – Lady Amherst in Race 5 and Queen Supreme in Race 7.
Although only a one-time winner, Alec Laird-trained Lady Amherst has been the model of consistency, having one third and four seconds in her five other runs. She contests a FM 83 Handicap over 1800m and the scratching of main danger Sultanah has opened the door for her to win her second start.
This will be her first race beyond 1600m but on breeding, she should thrive over the extra 200m. S’manga Khumalo takes the ride.
Queen’s Supreme put up a superb run last when she came back from a five-month break to finish a 1.75-length second behind War Of Athena in the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge over 1600m at Turffontein last month.
Mike de Kock’s runner had to give 9kg to the winner, which was always going to be a testing task.
This time she runs in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1600m and she is the joint best-weighted runner long with two other mares, Chitengo and Jet Start. They would both prefer further while Queen Supreme is at her best over this distance.
She goes well for Callan Murray and he will be back in the irons yet again.
