Qitaal can strike at Pontefract

Following a pleasing reappearance at Doncaster two weeks ago, Qitaal looks well placed to add to his tally in the Riu Hotels And Resorts Handicap at Pontefract on Monday.

The six-year-old won twice last season after Charlie Johnston bought him out of Ken Condon's Irish yard for just 4,000 guineas, with a successful stable debut at Doncaster in March supplemented by a runaway victory at Chester in September.

Having been been off the track for six months when bidding to win the same Doncaster race late last month, Qitaal ran a fine race on ground that was perhaps a bit quicker than ideal and was beaten just a length into third place.

He should improve for the run and looks capable of going a couple places better off the same mark. Any rain would aid his cause.

The Michael Dods-trained Arkenstaar began last season off a mark off 66 in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Save Lives Handicap and finished third.

He went on to win his next two outings which saw him rise to a rating of 71, and he continued to run well all season off marks in the mid-70s.

Having dropped back down to 68, just 2lb higher than at this point last term, he could easily make a winning return.

Now that Laura Morgan's Benmore has got off the mark, he can follow up in the Download The At The Races App "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle at Hexham.

Second twice and then third at Newcastle, he was then fourth in a decent event at Doncaster.

His inexperience showed in racing keenly but sent to Hexham last time out, he settled much better and came home an easy winner.

Admittedly that was a weak race, but this one lacks any strength in depth and while he meets main rivals That One and Young Getaway wrong at the weights, the feeling is he has more untapped potential.

Les's Legacy can make it back-to-back course and distance wins in the Brocksbushes Farm Shop Handicap Hurdle.

Trainer Susan Corbett's decision to apply cheekpieces to her eight-year-old proved a masterstroke three weeks ago as he travelled sweetly on his way to a first win in exactly two years.

The handicapper has handed him a 6lb hike in the ratings, but he is still not badly treated on his best form and if the headgear has the same effect at the second attempt, he can strike gold again.

The fact that Dan Skelton's local track of Warwick do a better job than some with prize-money could aid his title bid.

His Lady Jago should win the eventmasters.co.uk Mares' Handicap Chase while Gwennie May Jem might be able to get off the mark in the Racing TV Novices' Handicap Chase.

Skelton will have been disappointed his Queens Wish was beaten so easily at Doncaster after such a promising start to her career but the winner is above average and the eventmasters.co.uk Handicap Hurdle does not look as strong. - Press Association
