Pure Maverick to frank the form

April 2022

Jack Milner

Pure Maverick has run in a couple of feature races and has placed in both.

After finishing fourth on debut, beaten 3.55 lengths by Street Outlaw, Justin Snaith’s charge then lined up in the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes over 1000m at Kenilworth on Cape Town Met day, and did well to end up a 5.50-length fifth behind Cliff Top.

Snaith then ran the United States colt in the Grade 3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery over 1200m where the form of the Summer Juvenile Stakes was confirmed.

The race was won by We’re Jamming who was previously the runner-up behind Cliff Top with Pure Maverick in fourth, 2.70 lengths back.

Both form lines are looking pretty decent with four winners coming from the Summer Juvenile Stakes and two from the Nursery.

The two from the latter race were second-placed Wecandanceallnight, and third-placed Grinkov. Grinkov had previously finished third behind Cliff Top in the Summer Juvenile where he was just 0.25 lengths ahead of Pure Maverick, this franking the form of both feature races.

In Race 2 at Kenilworth today, Pure Maverick reverts to a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m and he should prove very hard to beat.

S’manga Khumalo, who rode Pure Maverick in his debut run, has been given the ride once again.

While no horse gets an official merit rating until they have raced at least three times, and juveniles do not have them published at all unless they race against their elders, the handicappers do keep unofficial ratings for them as they progress.

In the case of Pure Maverick, he has an unofficial merit rating of 88 with Vaughan Marshall- trained Marvel William, who has only raced twice, next best on 86.

Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge, Charlie Malone, who has also run three times, is next best on 80.
