Promising fillies to stake their claims

November 2025

Jack Milner

The door for next month’s Cape Fillies Guineas was thrown wide open on Saturday when two leading contenders for the Grade 1 race failed to feature in the Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship over 1600m on the Winter track at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Eastern Cape raider Anotherdanceforme and Quickstepgal were predicted to fight out the finish but that did not come fruition. The race went to Dean Kannemeyer-trained Princess Of Gaul, who went off at 10-1 with Lowveld Lily (100-1) and Keukenhof (33-1) filling the next two spots.

Quickstepgal finished fourth but Anotherdanceforme never really got into the race and was beaten five lengths.

However, it would be unwise to write her off just yet as that was her second run back from a layoff and her first on a left-handed track.

However, there are another two impressive fillies carded to line up in Race 6, a Class F Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m on Monday. They are Reet Petite and Viva La Vida and are expected to fight out the finish.

James Crawford has made no secret of what he thinks of unbeaten Rafeef filly Reet Petite. He has rated her from Day 1 and while she has shown inexperience, she nevertheless has still managed to put her opposition to bed over 1250m and 1500m, both times with an explosive turn of foot.

However, Vaughan Marshall has also been singing the praises of his Gimmethegreenlight filly Viva La Vida who recently made it three wins in a row.

Reet Petite, with Richard Fourie up, is open to any amount of improvement and comes into this race receiving 3kg from Viva La Vida. She also has the better draw at No 5 and looks to be the best bet on the card.

Sean Veale rode Viva La Vida to her last two wins and he will be back in the irons once again.
