Precise looks another star in the making for O'Brien

October 2025

Precise can claim a clear-cut victory in the Bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket's key autumn meeting on Friday.

Aidan O'Brien's Starspangledbanner chestnut, who is out of a Galileo mare in Way To My Heart, has run four times to date and won three of those starts.

Notably she was triumphant in the Group Three Prestige Stakes at Goodwood in August, after which she stepped up to the top level to land the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last month.

That win came over stablemate Beautify and Karl Burke's Venetian Sun, and although the former has not upheld the form in the Cheveley Park, any defeat of the Group One-proven latter is not to be taken lightly.

A step up in trip seems the natural next step for the filly, who does not look remotely ground dependent and can put her best foot forward against many talented fillies on the Rowley Mile.

The opening Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes looks a nice opportunity for Precise's stablemate Brussels, who was last seen finishing second in the Group One Middle Park Stakes over 1200m.

It will be a first time at the minimum trip for the son of the late Wootton Bassett, who has been campaigned over 1200m to 1500m to date.

His ideal distance perhaps remains to be seen, but his form points to plenty of class that should see him right in this drop down in both calibre and trip.

The Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes can go the way of Owen Burrows' Calendar Girl, who makes a Group-race debut under Callum Rodriguez for owners Kennet Valley Syndicates.

Winner of a valuable sales race at Doncaster when last seen, the filly was previously second in an Epsom novice and the winner of a Newbury maiden.

The form has held up relatively well in between times and she looked on Town Moor like she may enjoy going back up in trip, something she will get when stepping into Group company for the first time at Newmarket.

Cosmic Year is the selection in the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Challenge Stakes, where the Irish 2,000 Guineas runner-up is likely to appreciate a return to quicker ground after his promising early season has been followed up by a couple of below-par efforts in slower conditions.

Tim Easterby's veteran Copper Knight would be a very popular winner of the race named in his honour, the Copper Knight Winning-Most Horse Handicap at York.

He showed he was still a force to be reckoned with when winning at Redcar last week.

National Hunt fans will be rubbing their hands as the winter game could be said to kick-off properly at Chepstow, with the opening afternoon of the inaugural Welsh Racing Festival.

The feature on day one at the Monmouthshire track is the Dragonbet Persian War Novices' Hurdle, in which the Fergal O'Brien-trained Jack Hyde looks a leading player.

He was an easy winner on his reappearance in September, so should be spot on for what is a nice prize at a trip at which he is bred to improve again this season. - Press Association
