Potente has potential on the poly

With Greg Cheyne going off to the UK, trainer Alan Greeff has been using S’manga Khumalo as his rider in chief and the pair have got off to a good start.

Racing is competitive on the Polytrack at Fairview on Friday but Greeff and Khumalo have some horses with winning potential and can start off well enough in Race 1, a Maiden Plate for three-year-olds over 1200m.

The ball could start rolling in Race 1 as his charge Potente is likely to show good improvement back on the Polytrack.

The Var gelding started his racing career in KwaZulu-Natal with Glen Kotzen and began well enough, finishing just 3.75 lengths off the winner on debut over 1000m on the turf at Scottsville.

His second run was over 1000m on the Polytrack at Greyville and where he put up the best race of his career so far, ending up a 0.30-length second behind Big Slick.

He pulled up lame in that race and was rested for just over two months but his two runs after that were moderate.

He then moved to Greeff in Port Elizabeth but was a bit of a disappointment on his local debut. But that was on the turf and perhaps he was in need of the outing.

This time he returns to the Polytrack, going over 200m further, and from No 1 draw may be the right one in a weak race.
