Peter to start new season in style

PAUL PETER

Jack Milner: Paul Peter has had the best season of his career to finish runner-up behind Justin Snaith in the 2020/21 season that ended on Saturday.

However, the Turffontein-based trainer is preparing to get his next season off to a flying start and could come away with three winners on the Standside track at that course on Sunday.

The run could start in Race 2, where he saddles Dr Doolittle in a MR 104 Handicap over 2000m. This son of Ideal World has raced 10 times for four wins and three places. His last run was in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 where he took on some of the best three-year-olds in the country.

A big run was expected, but jockey Muzi Yeni felt something amiss during the running and did not persevere with the colt. A post-race examination by the course veterinarian revealed that he pulled up short on his right hind leg.

Hopefully the injury is sorted out and Dr Doolittle will be back to his best for this event. If he is, he will be hard to beat.

In Race 4 Peter saddles Bold Ransom in this Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m and he looks the runner to beat. He is well handicapped as he holds both Oravar and Rivarine on a previous run.

The main danger could be Valyrian King, especially as Paul Matchett chose to withdraw his charge from a race at Greyville on Saturday and leave him to run in this event. There is little between the pair on their last meeting.

In Race 5, a MR 87 Handicap for fillies and mares over 2000m, Ideal Jet also looks hard to beat. Her last run was in the Grade 2 SA Oaks over 2450m where she was fancied by the stable. She possibly did not see out the distance, but that race was won by superstar War Of Athena in a canter.

Back against this level of fillies and mares, she only has to be anywhere close to peak fitness to win.

Speaking about his runners, Peter said: “Put a line through Dr Doolittle’s last run. He’s working very well, and I make him the horse to beat.

“Bold Ransom is a big runner and should contest the finish.

“Ideal Jet is working well but she could be in need of the run.”

Peter also advised bettors not to leave Baymax, who will be having his first run since having been gelded, out of their reckoning. He runs in in Race 7. “He’s a very naughty horse but has improved a lot after gelding. I’m hoping for a good run.”

Warren Kennedy will be making the trip from Durban to ride at the meeting, and he is aboard all four runners for the Peter stable.
