Jack Milner: Space Race was well supported to win her last start but was caught late by The Makwakkers, going down by 1.25 lengths.
Paul Peter’s charge can make amends on Tuesday when she lines up in Race 7, a Classified Stakes over 1200m on the Vaal Classic Track.
As was the case last time over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside track, this race is around the turn, so draws are important. Last time The Makwakkers jumped from barrier No 1, a massive advantage at that track, while Space Race was drawn No 5.
This time both are drawn wide, Peter’s charge at No 10 and Roy Magner’s runner at No 11. Not only does Space Race have a slight edge over her rival in the draw department, but she is also 1.5kg better off, and that could make all the difference.
There is a change of jockey on the three-year-old daughter of Master Of My Fate this time as Calvin Habib takes over from Lyle Hewitson, who is committed to ride Magic Choice for the Sean Tarry yard.
There look to be a couple of bankers on the card for the exotics and they are Lady Of The Flame in Race 4 and Boleto in Race 6.
Lady Of The Flame has placed consistently of late but has been unable to find her way into the No 1 box. Trainer Paul Matchett has found the ideal race in this Maiden Plate over 1450m where she will tackle a really moderate field.
Muzi Yeni is in top form and had another three winners at Turffontein on Saturday. He takes the ride on this three-year-old Act Of War filly.
However, there is always a concern when a runner continuously finds one to beat her and for those who feel that way, it could be worth backing her up in the Pick 6 with Smelting, who tries this trip for the first time.
Boleto is trained by Mike and Adam Azzie and has only raced three times and runs in another Maiden Plate over 1450m. His last start was most appealing as it was over this course and distance and he ran a one-length second behind Letsdoit.
Gavin Lerena took the ride last time and he has elected to ride this two-year-old son of Var again.
