This has been quite a year for trainer Paul Peter. He has all but wrapped up his first national trainers’ title and on Thursday he trained his 216th winner of the season, beating the record of 215 set by Sean Tarry for the most winners in a season.

While Peter is currently in Durban, his son, Tony made an moving speech after Vanderbilt won the final race at Turffontein.

“I got very emotional, especially after Tony’s speech. We are all very passionate and when he spoke, I just broke down and cried,” admitted Peter.

“It is unbelievable.”

At the beginning of the season Peter had a meeting with his staff and told them that with the quality their stock they should aim to get over 200 winners this season. “I’ve been pushing them all the time and they have all be so incredibly motivated.

“But when the decision was made to cut back on the number of meetings, I was concerned but then I decided we should start raiding Durban.

“I also realised if we were to get the record, we would have to do it with our babies, and our two-year-olds really came to the party.

“But kudos to my team, we all stood together and we did it, and we’re going to continue pushing all the way to the line

Peter will now try to ensure Lamborghreeni gets a place in the Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 30 July.
