Orlando Pirates and the wider South African football community today bid farewell to one of its most respected leaders, as club captain Innocent Maela officially retires from professional football.
Maela, 32, concludes a career spanning more than 15 years, during which he made over 200 appearances for the Buccaneers. He joined Pirates in 2017 from Thanda Royal Zulu and quickly became a pillar of the side. Under his leadership as captain from 2022, he steered the team to multiple trophies, including two Nedbank Cups and four MTN8 titles.
At a formal retirement dinner held in Johannesburg, Maela reflected on his decision, saying he recognised the moment to step aside. He expressed gratitude to the club, teammates, coaches, staff, and supporters for their trust and support over the years.
“Being captain of Pirates was a special honour I will never forget,” he said. “I leave knowing I gave my all — now it’s time for the next generation to carry the torch.”
The club will soon outline plans to honour his service and legacy. At present, Maela plans to take a break, focus on personal goals, and remain open to roles in football administration.
