Ode to Robert Burns at Kenilworth

June 2022

Jack Milner

There looks to be some decent banker opportunities for bettors at Kenilworth on Tuesday, it might just be a matter of picking the right one.

The best could be Brett Crawford-trained Robert Burns, who lines up in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1800m.

This three-year-old gelding has only raced three times, all over 1400m at Kenilworth, finishing unplaced on debut and then running third and second respectively.

His last run was particularly impressive as he had to jump from drawn No 11 which is a mighty obstacle over that course and distance as the race almost starts on the bend. That probably forced jockey Luyolo Mxothwa to bounce out and go to the front, probably in the hope some other horse would go past him. However, that did not happen, and he had to make the pace and was caught on the line, going down a head to Kapuziner.

He now goes over 1800m which on breeding should be ideal for this son of Twice Over. He does not bump the strongest of fields and as a runner who is rapidly improving, Robert Burns looks ready to shed his maiden.

The other opportunity comes up in Race 3, Maiden Plate over 1400m, where Justin Snaith and Keagan de Melo team up with well-bred What A Winter colt Stratospheric. He bids to go one better after consecutive seconds over 1000m and 1200m. The extra 200m with racing experience under his belt ought to bring about improvement from Stratospheric who De Melo knows well, having partnered him in his first two starts.
