NEWSREADER CAN HIT THE HEADLINES AT LINGFIELD

December 2024

By Anita Chambers, PA

Newsreader can prove a mile is within his compass with victory in the Weekly Free Bets With BetMGM Extra Handicap at Lingfield.

The three-year-old has reserved his best efforts for seven furlongs so far, winning three times including when last seen at Kempton in early November.

He was staying on all the way for a cosy half-length victory that day and while his only previous effort over a mile ended in defeat, he was up against some decent types and was ultimately beaten less than five lengths in eighth.

It is too early to dismiss this improving gelding’s chances over a longer trip.

Maharba Ghaiyyath shaped with plenty of promise on debut and is the pick in the Gamble Responsibly At BetMGM/EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

A half-brother to Stayers’ Hurdle winner Nichols Canyon and Group One-placed Fujaira Prince, it would be fair to expect this colt’s future to lie over middle distances and beyond next season.

However, he showed he is not too shabby over a mile either, beaten just half a length at the first attempt by a rival with previous experience when putting in all his best work at the end.

This 28,000 guineas purchase certainly appears to have the ability to win a race like this.

Santorini Star can thrive for the move up to 10 furlongs in the Extra Winnings With BetUK Acca Club Handicap.

After finishing third at the first attempt, the daughter of Golden Horn made no mistakes the second time when proving pretty game to win by a length at Kempton over a mile.

The further she went, the better she seemed to run so it is an obvious move to step up in distance.

Fireblade has failed to live up to his illustrious pedigree but can be given one last chance in the £30 In Free Bets With BetUK Novice Stakes at Newcastle.

As a full-brother to Cracksman, hopes would have been high that he could make a real impact this year.

However, he was gelded in July and did not actually make the track until September, when he came home fifth in a Kempton novice.

An improved effort when second at Ascot meant he was reasonably well fancied for a 14-furlong contest on soft ground at Nottingham.

Fireblade found that task beyond his stamina reserves, but he has conditions and a reduced distance back in his favour this time.

Fort George has a winning opportunity in the Gamble Responsibly At BetMGM Novice Stakes.

Fourth on his initial run, he found one too good last time but a similar effort can see him get off the mark.

Star Artist showed a degree of promise in his only bumper run last term and can build on that at Southwell.

His brother and sister, Our Jester and Urban Artist, were both winners for trainer Hughie Morrison and Star Artist can uphold the family honour in the attheraces.com/marketmovers National Hunt Flat Race.

Jordans Cross can make an immediate mark over obstacles in the attheraces.com/marketmovers Maiden Hurdle.

A point-to-point scorer in March, he then changed hands for £50,000 and was only beaten half a length in a Chepstow bumper on his first spin for Anthony Honeyball.

Jordans Cross is quickly switched to hurdles and the hint should be taken.
