My Boy Lollipop looks sweet

Not too many people around these days will remember one of the great hits of 1964 called My Boy Lollipop.

It was performed by a young Jamaican teenager name Millie and the catchy melody was blasted from every radio station around the country.

Now 60 years later, it has made an equine reappearance on the South African racing scene as Frank Robinson sends out a Soqrat colt with the same name at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Thursday.

There are only seven races on offer for that meeting on the Polytrack but My Boy Lollipop can get punters off to a winning start in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1200m.

He looked pretty good on debut despite drifting badly in the betting from an opening call of 9-2 to go off at 14-1.

But that run, over 1200m on the turf at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, belied his betting price as h was always up with the pace and stayed on nicely to finish a 0.50-length second behind Isivavane.

There is the change of surface to worry about as well as that fact that My Boy Lollipop is still a juvenile but with Muzi Yeni up, he is expected to rise to the occasion.
