My Best Shot to defy the form

November 2024

On paper My Best Shot should have no chance of beating Sakurajima in Race 3, the Guineas Plate over 1600m on the Polytrack at Fairview on Friday, but that might not turn out to be the case.

My Best Shot meets rivals Sakurajima and Play Act on weight terms that clearly favour the latter pair.

My Best Shot is the proven best of those three runners so far, having won four of his 10 starts.

In his latest outing, which was over the course and distance, he finished a disappointing third and six lengths behind easy winner On My Honour, a recent well-beaten runner on the turf last Saturday in the Grade 2 Cape Punters Cup over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

His rivals in this, Sakurajima, finished two lengths ahead of him and Play Act was two lengths behind him.

All three of those runners carried 60kg and this time around My Best Shot stays carrying 60kg, with the other two carrying 54kg.

That should make it very hard for My Best Shot to win, but we shall see.

My Best Shot lost ground at the start of that last race and failed to kick on. It could be an entirely different race should he get out on terms this time.

If the Richard Fourie/Alan Greeff combination do not score with My Best Shot they can win with Masked Vigilante in Race 8, a MR 86 Handicap over 1400m.

The Vercingetorix gelding has been very good on the Polytrack so far, winning three of his four races on the surface.

It is also worth remembering that his last defeat was most unlucky. Masked Vigilante only narrowly won his last two starts and picked up a three-point penalty for the recent success but seems the type that does what he needs to do at the finish.
