Muscutt to wear the shoes on the Poly

April 2023

Jack Milner

Cape Town form is generally stronger than in many other centres and there are two runners in Race 1 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday who look set to fight out this Maiden Plate over 1400m on the Polytrack.

Peter Muscutt decided to take Shoefella to Cape Town for the summer and although he failed to win a race, he did run well enough to indicate he will be a contender in this very weak Maiden Plate.

The three-year old Jackson gelding did not run well on his debut run but his second run, when he finished a two-length third behind Montien is worth attention as is his seventh place behind Intimidator in his final run.

Two winners have come from each of those to form lines and Montien, while not winning after that, has placed in all three of his follow-up runs, not finishing further back than 1.75 lengths in all of them.

Also of relevance is that his debut run in KwaZulu-Natal was on the Polytrack where he finished a one-length third behind Johndunbar, producing the fastest final 400m over 1200m.

The one concern is that he will have to jump from No 10 draw. Tristan Godden takes the ride.

The main danger is likely to come from Vaughan Marshall-trained San Pedro.

Marshall has made an early move to KwaZulu-Natal ahead f the official start next month of the Champions Season.

San Pedro has also run four times and has not placed yet, but he also has not finished far behind the winner. He is slightly better drawn at No 5 and has Craig Zackey up but this will be his first run on the Polytrack.

However, his full brother, Padre Pio, was one of the leading colts of his generation and was actually unbeaten in two races on the poly. His brother may also prove to be a revelation on the surface.
