Although there are a number of first-timers in the early races at Turffontein on Saturday, Callan Murray has a chance of getting off the mark in Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1160m, where he rides Emerald Forge for Mike and Mathew de Kock.
Only three of the 11 runners have raced and Emerald Forge is the only filly to have had two runs. In both of the them she performed well, finishing second over the course and distance on debut behind Crystal Grove, and then third to Sister Golden Hair over 1450m on the Inside track over 1450m.
The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight will probably benefit from the drop to 1160m and perhaps the firmer going will also work in her favour. Her first two races were run during the rainy period on the Highveld and she had to deal with yielding going. That has all dried up and she will have the benefit of good going this time.
This filly has to be showing some decent work at home as she has gone off a strong favourite in both of her starts.
There is a similar situation in Race 2, another Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1160m where trainer Fanie Bronkhorst sends out Raceway.
This daughter of New Predator has also raced twice, finishing fourth on debut and then finished runner-up over 1000m. Raceway need not improve much over the extra 160m to open her account at the third attempt in Race 2 and get Lerena off the mark for trainer Fanie Bronkhorst. On the evidence of her last outing, the extended will be more to the liking of this two-year-old.
