Moss to make most of Ayr opportunity

March 2025

Fergal O'Brien's That'll Do Moss can rise to the top in the weatherbysshop.co.uK EBF Mares' "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle at Ayr on Friday.

The six-year-old is a point-to-point and bumper winner who transitioned to hurdling after a seventh-placed finish at Listed level in her final run in the National Hunt flat sphere.

She has run over hurdles twice since, winning easily at Ayr on her first attempt with a 6-length victory over a 3200m trip.

Her next run was over an extended 4000m in the Grade Two Jane Seymour at Sandown, where she was just pipped to the post by Jamie Snowden's Hollygrove Cha Cha and missed out by a short head.

The run was still highly encouraging and back at a similar trip at a lesser level, she is surely the horse to beat.

On the same card, My Kiwi Girl can land the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Maiden Hurdle for trainer Nick Alexander.

The six-year-old has form that correlates with That'll Do Moss having been second behind her in the previously mentioned Ayr contest over 3200m.

My Kiwi Girl was second again on her next start in a Newcastle maiden hurdle, coming closer still to getting her head in front when stepped up 200m in trip.

Back at Ayr and back over 3200m, she can get off the mark, with Brian Hughes booked to do the steering.

At Exeter, Gary and Josh Moore's Mark Of Gold will appreciate a step down in class in the CRS Building Supplies Novices' Limited Handicap Chase.

The eight-year-old has some smart form on his CV and was a Grade Two winner earlier in the campaign when taking the Noel Novices' Chase at Ascot before Christmas.

He was set a Grade One task in the Scilly Isles at Sandown on his next start after that, but did not fire on heavy ground and was a well-beaten third of four.

In the Pendil at Kempton, he regained his form to finish third again, but this time only 2 lengths behind the winner in a more competitive effort at Grade Two level.

He returns to the world of handicaps at Exeter and steps down in trip, and there will be only two rivals standing between him and a second chasing victory.

Good And Clever can live up to his name in the CRS Building Supplies "National Hunt" Maiden Hurdle at the same meeting.

The six-year-old has plenty of notable form on his record, with his third-placed Grade Two bumper run coming behind two smart horses from Fergal O'Brien's yard in Horaces Pearl and Tripoli Flyer.

He was then second to the expensively-purchased Regent's Stroll on his hurdling debut, third behind Potters Charm in the Grade One Formby and third again to the current Supreme Novices' Hurdle favourite Kopek Des Bordes in the Grade One Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown.

This maiden is a brush with far less exalted company and he can claim his first success over hurdles. - Press Association
