Sam Mosia rode a double at the Vaal on Thursday to claim the 2021/22 Work Riders’Challenge.
Wins in Race 4 aboard Mike The Pilot (22-10) for St John Gray and in Race 7 on Double Magic (15-10) for Paul Peter were enough to see him edge ahead of Phenisile Mongqawa and claim the R20,000 winner’s cheque.
In addition, his third place in Race 1 aboard Ship At Sea (33-1), also for Gray, also allowed him to claim the R5,000 prize for the best work rider at the meeting.
Mosia finished the Challenge on 91 points with Mongqawa on 85 point. Well back in third position came Tshepiso Matsoele, who finished on 53 points.
Mosia's points tally at Thursday's meeting was 25, with Chamu Mabaya just one point back on 24 and Matsoele in third on 24.
There were two fallers on the day but fortunately both work riders and horses came through relatively unscathed.
