Morte points to Chelmsford winner

October 2025

Morte Point can maintain his good run of form this year with victory in the CCR Handicap at Chelmsford on Thursday.

The three-year-old has only really disappointed twice in his eight career starts, with three juvenile runs yielding a win and a second place before a lacklustre final effort saw him packed off on a winter break, which also included a gelding operation.

Morte Point then put up no sort of show on his return in May, with trainers William Muir and Chris Grassick then giving him a 78-day break before returning with a fourth place in July that has proved the foundation for three fine efforts subsequently.

A narrow second at Leicester in August was followed by a win at Newbury and then another runner-up spot at Doncaster's St Leger meeting.

Morte Point started the campaign on a mark of 79 and is only 3lb higher now, which gives him plenty of appeal as he tries the all weather for just the second time.

Fire Eyes is 3lb well in for the Download The At The Races App Handicap at Southwell and should be followed.

She is now rated 62 after being beaten just 0.5-lengths over the same 1600m course she faces here, with a further 4.75-lengths back to the third.

That was just her second start for Roger Fell, having won on her debut, and her quick reappearance just nine days later means she can run off her old mark.

The application of blinkers appeared to work the oracle for Shabu Shabu last time out and if they can have the same effect in the Parkfield Equine Solutions Handicap at Brighton, he could be tough to beat.

A winner at Yarmouth in August after some decent previous runs, he then went off the boil before a return to form when second at Pontefract in mid-September.

That may not have been the strongest race but the fourth has come out and won since, so Shabu Shabu is certainly one for the short list.

Presentandcounting can be relied upon to put in a good performance in the Vesta Wealth Handicap Chase at Carlisle.

The 11-year-old has been a fine servant for Donald McCain, winning 15 times in total in bumper, hurdles and chase company - most recently scoring at Uttoxeter in May.

He triumphed there off 119 and is currently on 122, eased a couple of pounds following two subsequent third places at Bangor and Warwick, which should be a help.

Tellherthename ultimately proved a bit of a disappointment last year but is one to note as he starts out over fences in the David Allen 'Chasing Excellence 'Beginners' Chase.

A point-to-point winner back in 2023, he looked really promising as a novice hurdler, running Grade One winner Jango Baie to a nose before beating Grade Two calibre runner Lucky Place by 14 lengths.

He failed to make a mark in the 2024 Supreme for Ben Pauling and subsequently transferred to the Jonjo and AJ O'Neill team, Tellherthename failed to spark in three starts last term, so hopefully the move to fences can reignite his spark. - Press Association
