When discussing horses to follow from his stable, Paul Peter had Moraine as one to keep an eye on, saying she was “a very smart filly”.
She is closely related to Summer Pudding, whose dam, Cherry On The Cake, is a half-sister to Moraine’s dam, Tiger Cherry – and both are by Silvano.
She won first time out over 1400m at the Vaal, beating Mercurial Jet by 3.75 lengths on 14 June. When Peter handed in his trainer’s licence, Moraine moved to Johan Janse van Vuuren. She had her first outing for the yard on 8 October in a Progress Plate for three-year-old fillies over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track. She drifted markedly in the betting from 6-1 to 25-2 but then put up an excellent performance to finish a 0.60-length second to 14-10 favourite Captain Peg.
Moraine is back on the Turffontein Inside track on Thursday when she lines up in Race 2, a Graduation Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m.
While she is not the best weighted runner, the three-year-old filly will have come on with her last run and looks very hard to oppose in this field.
She will carry 55kg, has Keagan de Melo in the irons, and they jump from No 7 draw.
The scratching on Thursday morning of Simple Simple, who is carded to run on Saturday, Liliana and Intoxicating has left just four runners in the field and that has resulted in Moraine becoming a very short-priced favourite
