Max out on Munger at Fairview

May 2022

Jack Milner

To The Max made a most promising debut at Fairview and looks set to get on an early winning track in Race 4 on Friday.

They will be racing on the Polytrack which is right up her street as she has a really good record on the surface. Until now, she has raced predominantly at Greyville and in 25 starts on the Polytrack she has a record of four wins and 15 places – simply a model of consistency.

The five-year-old Judpot mare moved from Wendy Whitehead’s KwaZulu-Natal yard to Tara Laing in February and has only had one run at Fairview in which she finished a 1.75-length third behind Abia over 1600m.

She sticks to that distance this time as she will contest a MR 66 Handicap for fillies and mares and with that run under her belt, she looks a solid banker on a card that looks particularly tricky.

Despite that promising run, Ryan Munger felt something amiss with the mare and it turned out she had been cut into. Munger will be back in the irons this time and they jump from barrier No 8.

Greg Cheyne, who regularly rides at Fairview for trainer Alan Greeff, will not be travelling to Port Elizabeth for this meeting and that has allowed apprentice Rachel Venniker to make a rare trip to the Eastern Cape and she has picked up some decent rides for Greeff.

She rode her 60th winner on Monday and no longer claims an apprentice allowance but she should still feature prominently on Glacier Gold in Race 7.

The only horse Glacier Gold has not beaten from the field she meets, namely Persica, is badly off form and badly out at the weights. More importantly, Glacier Gold beat main dangers Joyful Noise and Franca by 6 lengths and 6.35 lengths in different races respectively.

Now the latter two will enjoy a return to the Polytrack after having been racing on turf and will be out to settle the score but Glacier Gold has won three in a row and is equally effective on both surfaces.
