Trainer Paul Matchett has had success raiding the KwaZulu-Natal and he has some decent runners on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Scottville, including gutsy last-start winner Skittles Skies who looks to be on the up.
Matchett’s Iconic Winter could start the day off with a bang for the yard and followers of favourites.
The What A Winter filly with 60kg finished clear second best in her last start behind useful Blushing Bloom (57kg) who franked the form with a decent second place finish on handicap debut next time.
Iconic Winter also gave up and coming Surprise Party 3kg when beaten a neck in her penultimate start. There are well-bred newcomers in Race 1, an Open Maiden, but the Matchett’s maiden is a lightly raced, fully matured four-year-old knocking at the door and she could be too strong for inexperienced rivals. As always follow the market moves to gauge the quality of the unraced individuals.
Calvin Habib takes the ride.
Having won over 1400m, Skittle Skies, who will line up in Race 6, a Middle Stakes over 1750m, recently showed he has improved with maturity with a prominent effort over 1800m before a resolute win, beating strong frontrunner Impact Investor over a testing 1600m at Turffontein.
He is related to stayers such as Salutation and Stud Master and while it was a fair run when third behind Rosh Kedesh at Scottsville in June, 1400m is now looking short for him.
Two runs back over 1800m at Turffontein, the Skitt Skizzle gelding looked dangerous, beaten 1.20 lengths by Don’t Cry For Me and that form line was also franked by Candice Dawson-trained Pioneer Square who was most impressive in a strong Graduation Plate last week.
Durban July winner rider Craig Zackey has been booked again, and he must be given a big chance of following up.
