Marshall and Bantam lined up for early Cape double

August 2021

Jack Milner: Vaughan Marshall has done well in both training top horses and then winning with their progeny.

He trained the brilliant Captain Al to win the Grade 1 Cape Guineas and the went on to honour the stallion by winning the country’s premier 1600m race for three-year-olds with his offspring. One of those was William Longsword who himself has now gone to stud.

Marshall appears to have a lot of faith in William Longsword as a sire and now trains a number of his progeny.

One of those is Voldemort, who is out of Secret Of Victoria, a mare who produced a number of winners for Marshall.

Voldemort made his debut last month over 1000m. He was slowly away, conceded two lengths at the jump and raced green at the rear of the field before turning it on late, weaving his way through the field to finish fourth just 2.70 lengths off the winner over under Craig Bantam.

On the evidence of that display, the step up to 1200m in Race 2 on Saturday should suit be ideal.

Senso Unico is likely to complete a quick double for the Marshall-Bantam combination in Race 3 over 1400m, if building on the promise of his debut fourth.

This well-bred three-year-old son of Twice Over was also slowly away on his introduction over 1200m, before finishing like a steam train to take fourth behind Danilo Danilovitch in a winners’ race.

With that run under his belt and the step up to 1400m expected to be more to his liking, Senso Unico could prove hard to beat from gate No 3 in a maiden event.

Bantam has been doing well since his return to the Western Cape and it is good to see he is getting the support he deserves.
