Hong Kong racing continues on Sunday for an 11-race fixture at Sha Tin featuring a Group 2 triple-header as some of Hong Kong’s best aim towards December’s International Races.
In the Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint (1200m), top-class Lucky Sweynesse aims to bounce back after experiencing defeat on two occasions this preparation. Conditions will favour Lucky Sweynesse more this week in the set weights race, as he only has to give away 2.5kg to most of the field, compared to more in his previous two runs under handicap conditions. Top sprinter Wellington makes his seasonal reappearance, marking his first start for Jamie Richards.
In the G2 Jockey Club Mile, California Spangle will be favoured to continue his winning ways after an impressive first-up win. Trainer John Size’s up-and-comer, Beauty Eternal, will give him the most work to do after finishing third in his first-up race against ‘Spangle’ and appearing to be in need of the run.
The G2 Jockey Club Cup (2000m) is the most open of the feature events, with Russian Emperor heading the ratings. The top-class stayer takes on a handy bunch of five-year-olds on the rise, including Sword Point, Five G Patch, and Straight Arron.
There’s also plenty of talent stepping out on the undercard, including promising four-year-old Helios Express who makes his seasonal return in the Class 2 Handicap over 1200m.
The John Size-trained sprinter left a lasting impression in three starts last season. He flashed home late into second place from a wide draw on debut in early June before confidently winning his next two starts. Size appears to have prepared Helios Express well for his return, evident through three barrier trials. However, resuming after over four months of absence always raises questions. - Hong Kong Jockey Club
