Let's get ready to Rumble at Kempton

January 2025

Distant Rumble can complete a swift course-and-distance double in the Try Unibet's New Smartview Racecards Handicap at Kempton on Wednesday.

Roger Teal's charge was out of luck in five juvenile outings from May through to September, but he did improve in increments and ended his two-year-old campaign with a couple of placed efforts at Bath.

Subsequently gelded and given a bit of time off the track, he returned to action at this course last week, stepping up to 1200m for the first time to good effect.

Racing off a mark of 68, he grabbed the lead inside the distance and went on to prevail by 1.25-lengths, keeping on well.

Distant Rumble has to contend with a 6-point penalty here, but he looked as though he could be open to more progression and can defy that higher mark.

Quai De Bethune is the pick in the second division of the Unibet Supports Safer Gambling Maiden Stakes.

A modest E75,000 purchase as a yearling, he was sent off a 33-1 shot on his debut for Andrew Balding at Sandown back in September.

He was beaten 8.25-lengths in third, behind a winner who is entered in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and a runner-up who ran Classic contender Bay City Roller to less than a length on debut.

Quai De Bethune was slowly away that day and looked very much in need of the experience, with the slight switch up to 1600m here a positive on pedigree.

Opera Ballo is one to watch in division one. He is having his first start for Charlie Appleby having bypassed a juvenile campaign, but given his sire Ghaiyyath really reached his peak at four and beyond, his best days should be ahead of him.

Whizz By can live up to her name by chalking up a fourth successive victory in the Unibet Zero% Mission (London Mile Series Qualifier) Handicap.

She has won three times at Southwell now, rising from a mark of 51 to her current perch of 67 after a recent 0.5-length win.

Her previous effort at Kempton in July last year yielded no joy, but she is a filly in form for Tom Ward and seemingly very game. - Press Association
